It was a sweltering day and I came in for a break from mowing the lawn. Nothing appealed to me in the fridge so I went to our general store and there in the cooler was Pabst Blue Ribbon in 16 oz. cans calling out to me. I bought a six pack and cracked a can on the way home. And there it was—that clean, bright thirst quenching taste filling my mouth with cold beer while memories were flooding in of the 70’s at Spring Street Bar where Pabst was the only draft beer we carried.
Pabst is a classic American lager first made in 1844 by Empire Brewery, later renamed Pabst Brewing Company. In 1898 they produced 1 million barrels of beer! It won numerous competitions and Pabst hand tied blue ribbons around each Best Select beer until finally silk became too expensive. In the 50’s the blue ribbon became part of the label. The beer tastes as good today as the first time I tried one!
